Mothers Of War

Working with the Cardiff Temple of Peace and Health's WWI archives, this project looks to visually document untold personal stories throughout history with a focus on women affected by conflict. The work focuses on the Minnie James Collection in the archive. Minnie was a mother from South Wales who lost all three of her sons during the First World War. The collection is made up from the letters, postcards, and photos sent from David, John and Thomas while fighting in France. Minnie later opened Wales Temple of Peace in 1938, representing the bereaved mothers of Wales and the world.

The work is created using a mixture of traditional and digital mediums. It combines illustration with collage, inspired by information uncovered from the archives, to shed light on personal experiences of love and conflict.
